HAUS OF S&M

Review: HAUS OF S&M
A deliciously risque dining experience
Attempts at describing Haus of S&M are usually met with raised eyebrows. This bondage-themed Southeast Asian restaurant (yes, you read that right) is a beacon of light to Scarborough’s alternative cultural scene, located near to LOCL Properties’ Empire 39 and Esplanade apartments. The exterior design, featuring artwork by artist Imo Sophia, is serving red-light district chic. Once you’ve booked online, you receive a text with a unique pin code for entry, which is a playful and imaginative touch. The interior doesn’t disappoint – it’s packed with tongue-in-cheek nostalgia for Soho in the Paul Raymond era and some one-of-a-kind pieces by Imo Sophia.
All that, and you’ve only just got to your seat.
Haus of S&M comes from the team behind Eat Me Cafe and true to their reputation, you can expect a warm and friendly welcome. There is the option to take part in a lucky dip rather than the traditional approach of choosing your cocktail from a menu which adds another fun layer of theatricality to the experience.
The menu offers plates for sharing and dishes to have all to yourself. The food is consistently delicious (the chilli jam coconut chicken is a personal favourite) although the menu cleverly caters to most palettes.
The verdict? Haus of S&M is a brilliantly subversive, deliciously risque dining experience – perfect for those with open minds and empty bellies.
Please be aware prior to booking that the venue is 18+ and the maximum number per table is 4. An ideal adults only treat, or perfect if grandparents will babysit!
